Why is carbon accounting important?

readiness.


To start, we conduct a carbon accounting readiness assessment to identify the key data required and potential gaps with suggestions on how to proceed. This allows us to give you a clear idea of the pathway forward and what’s involved.


Included in this is a staff commute survey which also covers emissions associated with working from home, to give a comprehensive overview of the impact your employees have on a day-to-day basis.


Scope 1 and Scope 2 assessments.


Once we have completed the initial assessment, we can connect your Xero account to a third-party software to enable us to conduct assessments for Scope 1 (emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as fuel consumption in company vehicles or onsite energy use), and Scope 2 (emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling).


While this often makes up a small portion of a organisation’s overall footprint, it is an excellent starting point.

Scope 3
assessment.


The next step is to conduct a scope 3 assessment which accounts for emissions from the entire value chain, including activities like employee commuting, business travel, supply chain emissions and product use/disposal.


In an ideal world, we would get this information direct from your suppliers but in the absence of this we calculate on a spend basis using a formula of cost multiplied by the associated emission factor.
