Following the ill-fated Mini-Budget in September and the undoing of most of its measures in October, yesterday’s Autumn Statement was intended to create more certainty and stability in an economy beset by the highest inflation rate for 40 years, a cost of living crisis, soaring energy bills and a fall in the value of the pound. The Bank of England has predicted a recession that is likely to be the longest since records began.
