July is Disability Pride Month, which is an opportunity to promote education, inclusivity, awareness, and support for individuals with disabilities. An important part of this is improving understanding amongst non-disabled people and helping them to be better allies.
The awareness month originated in the US in 1990 and 2025 marks its 25th anniversary.
During July, we’ve been fortunate enough to host Deaf Awareness sessions at both our offices with Cambridge Deaf Association. The aim was for our people to learn more about what it is like to be deaf or hard of hearing, and learn how best to communicate together.
On top of that, during July the PEM Charitable Trust donated £2,800 to five local charities that support people with mental and/or physical disabilities. These charities include Branching Out, Camtrust, Phoenix Trust, Dhiverse and Cambridge Deaf Association. Projects that we have funded include work experience for those with learning difficulties, a minibus fundraising project, and an education project around relationships for those with autism or learning disabilities.
