With Cambridge Tech Week just around the corner, I’m excited to connect with the bright minds behind some of the organisations that make our city a globally recognised innovation hub. From the prestigious University and world-class teaching hospital to pioneering research centres, ambitious digital startups, and multinationals, I love working in a place where groundbreaking ideas flourish.

PEM has a deep heritage and connection with the Cambridge community, and we take pride in supporting local organisations. Being driven by curiosity and constantly striving to improve is something close to our hearts. We’re witnessing an exciting evolution as clients embrace AI in the medical technology, biotech, genomics and technology space. And, while technology and science ventures vary, they share remarkably similar financial challenges.

The innovation challenge

There are many pressures associated with early-stage businesses. They can face rapid growth and typically operate on short fundraising cycles. Many have negative cash flow from significant research and development investment. As well as the “unknown unknowns” of their ideas, entrepreneurs face pressure and challenge as their business evolves and scales.

Between compliance, reporting and bookkeeping requirements – not to mention the challenges of global expansion, talent attraction and retention, and protecting IP – corporate matters can quickly become overwhelming. Partnering with PEM means owners and entrepreneurs can focus on breakthrough innovations, while we help them navigate compliance and advisory matters with confidence.

Our relationship-based approach offers real breadth and depth and supports companies throughout their journey, from ad hoc financial reporting queries to payroll services, VAT complexities and employee incentive schemes. We’re particularly agile with R&D tax relief claims, working with businesses to deliver an efficient compliance service and ensuring this valuable relief is maximised. We also assist tech companies that receive grant funding by undertaking grant audits. This ensures brilliant ideas aren’t derailed by financial complexity.

Technology-driven excellence

Just as our clients embrace cutting-edge technology, we’ve embedded it into everything we do. We use Power BI visualisation and leverage data analytics for enhanced audit assurance. Data analytics improves the efficiency of our audits, providing enhanced quality and delivering meaningful insights.

Working as advisors, the PEM team can support with everything from cash flow modelling to Companies House filings for share issues. For those looking at global expansion, having the right corporate structure is essential as is considering global mobility or secondment of UK staff, and we help with this too. Clients benefit from our probing questions and strategic guidance that helps them overcome potential challenges.

Cambridge roots, global wings

Since we were established in Cambridge 150 years ago, we’ve developed a unique insight into the organisations around us – many of which have expanded to become worldwide successes. It’s great to share our expertise and play a part in the momentum of innovation through supporting dynamic businesses and creating opportunities to maximise value.

PEM’s services include accounts and tax compliance, virtual finance office, payroll, statutory audits and tax advisory services. If you’d like to chat to me, or anyone in my team, during Cambridge Tech Week, please get in touch with me
