Culling of Agricultural Wages Order Board

On the 22nd July 2010, the government announced its intention to abolish the agricultural wages board to try and bring agricultural workers in line with the National Wages Order Act. The government believes that these changes will allow the agricultural industry to adapt to flexible and modern employment practices.

Although no details have been released at present, there are a number of questions which will need addressing as further information comes out in the coming months.

Old & New Workers?
Current workers are unlikely to lose their agricultural contract terms and conditions of employment. Although PEM do anticipate that following the Agricultural Wages Order removal, agricultural workers will not be entitled to the same benefits in the future. New agricultural workers will now only benefit from the normal statutory regulations such as sick pay, leave and working time regulations.

What should you do?
Whilst no detailed information has been released at present, its likely that the abolition of the agricultural wages order will have a significant impact on the terms and conditions of agricultural workers and employees. With employers being advised to prepare themselves by reviewing contracts, as well as considering what terms and conditions would be most suitable for future employees.
