Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM) have worked closely with the charity as Auditors and Advisers. The audit is carried out in a professional manner and we have regular contact during the course of the year. We operate with a wholly owned trading subsidiary and we have received advice concerning trading issues and gift aid requirements. Excellent support has also been provided in dealing with Trustee responsibilities and we have been kept fully informed on legislation changes. As advisers, PEM have built up a comprehensive knowledge of our charity and are always readily available to deal with our regular questions. Bressingham Steam Preservation Trust

Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM) are accountants and auditors for Bressingham Steam Preservation Trust. As a charity with a mix of heritage and leisure attractions, we have an unusual mix of VAT exemptions, zero-ratings and full VAT liability. During the last audit PEM suggested that we might be paying VAT on certain projects, where we should be eligible to reclaim the tax.

We therefore asked PEM VAT Services to take up the case for us for the refund of VAT. This was a complicated matter which required considerable research and the complication of a compelling case to be submitted to HMRC.

PEM VAT Services undertook this task with tenacity and the anticipated attention to detail. As a result, HRMC carried out an inspection during which PEM VAT Services were present and provided the technical answers required. The case was proved in our favour and a substantial refund paid within weeks.

This was an excellent example of PEM working closely with its client to ensure a highly satisfactory outcome.

PEM HR consultancy services worked with us in 2006/07 to develop and implement a new Bonus and Appraisal Scheme at C3 Ltd. From the outset, the team were focused on the business and what the company wanted to achieve. We wanted to shake up our existing bonus scheme, and use it to invigorate and organisational shift focussed on customer care, responsibility, change management and innovation. 

PEM HR applied their professional knowledge and experience in order to give us a number of options through which we could motivate our employees to achieve this cultural change and deliver the business strategy by adapting our existing bonus scheme and introducing an appraisal scheme through which performance could be targeted, supported and measured. We particularly wanted to encourage and reward high achievement and the scoring mechanism PEM HR put in place reflected exellence/exceptional performance. 

Once we had chosen an option, Helen worked closely with us to draw up the proposed 2 new schemes in detail, to arrange appropriate consultation and drive us through to implementation in time for the new year. She delivered presentations clearly outlining the proposed schemes, to our employees on our premises to open the consultation period and was available to us throughout that time, to help and guide us as needed with our responses. We have no hesitation in recommending PEM HR to anyone needing a tailored approach to their reward strategy and guidance on motivating employees.

Before selecting PEM as our practice I had already ordered several products from the PEM website. I found the website incredibly easy to use with its uncluttered page layout and the consistent format of the navigation menu, so information was easy to find. I also found the site very approachable and very welcoming, I felt drawn in and spent a lot of time on the site. The content was very helpful, it made me feel empowered, the built-in functionality of being able to order reports and do due diligence on directors was particularly useful. Many specialist's sites such as lawyers, accountants and so forth, give the impression of "come to us, we know everything, you know nothing" whereas the PEM website portrayed a much more positive message, more like "we're here to help, we value being of value to you." FORCE Cancer Charity

We shall forever be indebted to PEM VAT Services for their successful negotiations on our behalf with HM Customs and Excise. We needed to build a new cancer support and information centre in Exeter and it was not clear whether the building work qualified for relief of VAT. The imposition of VAT at 17.5% would have meant postponing the project for at least 12 months. However, following lengthy and difficult negotiations with HM Customs & Excise over a period of 18 months, PEM obtained confirmation that zero rating was appropriate. PEM's help, forbearance and support in dealing with this matter during this difficult time was greatly appreciated. So far as local cancer patients, their carers and their families are concerned the favourable VAT position obtained by PEM will have a profound and beneficial effect on their lives.

We first used the services of PEM's HR consultancy in the summer of 2005, when Laura visited our company to undertake a thorough HR audit of our systems and documentation. Following from this, PEM HR have already provided us with a new employment contract and staff handbook, sorting out various inconsistencies and anomalies whilst ensuring we are legally compliant. These now contain all the information we need on current employment practices, and we have benefited from management awareness training giving us the know-how and expertise to use the policies and procedures it contains. The best thing for us is that the management group feels it now has the tools and confidence to do the job, and we have the reassurance that our contracts, policies and procedures are compliant with current employment legislation - a real headache for us, a small company as yet without our own HR resource.

Januarys

Our computer and communications system was slowing up and needed updating. As the company continues to expand, help and advice was needed. As we wanted to achieve our growth and expansion, we needed someone to take an informed look at what we had, what we wanted to do, and how we could reach our objectives. We chose to enlist the help of PEM IT Services to firstly review our current infrastructure and then provide a plan for moving forward. 

PEM IT Services carried out an IT Healthcheck and began to understand how Januarys staff used IT and what they expected from the system. The changeover with the new system installation took place over a single weekend. Disruption to staff was kept to a minimum by preparing the systems away from site, and then working outside office hours to install and transfer across existing data. Following the installation, PEM IT Services were on site when users arrived to help them get started with their new systems and make sure that everything they needed was in place. Our working partnership with PEM means that I can rely on them to fix any problem quickly and efficiently without damaging our system or disrupting staff. The focus and courtesy that was shown throughout the changeover was greatly appreciated by all.

Metalysis

Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM) have acted as auditors and tax advisors to Metalysis since its incorporation in October 2001. During this time the Company has grown from one part-time director in borrowed offices to in excess of fourty employees, over two sites in the UK. The Company has now recently expanded overseas. PEM has provided the Company with an excellent service for statutory and grant audits and has prepared and submitted R&D tax credits, corporation tax and other statutory returns on behalf of the Company. Furthermore, they have provided an excellent payroll service, all at extremely reasonable rates. I would have no hesitation in recommending PEM to any young company requiring a firm of accountants that can provide both a highly professional and personal service without incurring the high fees of the larger firms.
