Childcare Voucher Schemes Offering Childcare Vouchers has been proved to be one of the most effective ways an employer can help to attract and retain an increasingly important element of the workforce – working parents. A Childcare Voucher Scheme is a simple, cost effective way for employers to contribute towards their employees’ childcare costs. From 6 April 2006, Vouchers up to a value of £55 per week/£243 per month, per employee or for a couple £110 per week/£486 per month (using a 53 week year as per the HM Revenue & Customs guidelines) are exempt from income tax and both Employer’s and Employee’s National Insurance Contributions. This means that basic rate taxpayers save £962 per annum and higher rate taxpayers save £1,195, using a salary sacrifice arrangement, at very little cost to you, the employer. In addition, your Employer’s National Insurance Contributions will be reduced. With just ten employees in a Scheme each receiving vouchers to the value of £55 per week, you could save over £2,268 per year – after costs. With 36 employees in a Scheme on the same basis, your savings could be £8,196 per year – after costs. How can PEM Help?PEM HR has been running its own Childcare Voucher Scheme, called PEM PALS, working closely with local businesses and registered nurseries, childminders, after school clubs, holiday clubs etc. As we know our clients well and understand their requirements, we are able to offer a flexible and friendly service at a more preferable rate than the larger ‘faceless’ providers. We can step you through the process of setting up your scheme, help you with the Salary Sacrifice Agreements, process your payroll, administer and distribute your monthly order of vouchers and ensure that the childcare providers receive their payments in a timely and efficient manner. We also have experts on hand that can provide advice on the tax implications of running or contributing to such schemes. All in all, we can manage your Childcare Voucher scheme from beginning to end. That leaves you to concentrate on running your business whilst helping support your employees in one of the most important, and often fraught, aspects of their personal life. Knowing that their childcare worries are being taken care of and recognised by their employer will motivate them during their working day and will promote loyalty and commitment. Childcare schemes are becoming an increasingly popular benefit offered by employers and it may just give you that ‘extra something’ to attract and retain key members of your staff at very little cost to the organisation. For further information on setting up a scheme or implementing ‘family friendly’ policies, please contact Laura Hopson, Director of Human Resources, PEM HR, on 01223 728302 or email lhopson@pem.co.uk or contact Matthew Eady, Tax Manager on 01223 728358 or email meady@pem.co.uk
